Understanding Scoliosis: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment Options
Scoliosis is a condition characterized by an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine. While mild cases may cause little to no discomfort, more severe cases can lead to significant health issues and physical discomfort. At Lake Nona Family Chiropractic and Scoliosis Center, we specialize in the diagnosis and management of scoliosis, offering personalized care to help patients achieve optimal spinal health.
What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis involves a curvature of the spine that is more than 10 degrees to the left or right. The condition can be classified into different types based on its cause, including idiopathic, congenital, neuromuscular, and degenerative scoliosis. The most common form, idiopathic scoliosis, has no known cause and typically develops during adolescence. While the cause remains technically unknown, there are theories that are being explored. Asynchronous neuro-osseous growth, meaning the spine grows faster than the spinal cord, is one that stands out. More about that in future posts.
Signs of Scoliosis
Recognizing the signs of scoliosis early can lead to far better management and outcomes. Some common signs to watch for include:
Uneven Shoulders or Waist: One shoulder or hip may appear higher than the other.
Prominent Shoulder Blade: One shoulder blade may stick out more than the other.
Asymmetrical Rib Cage: The ribs on one side may protrude more prominently.
Shifted Waistline: The waist may appear uneven or tilted to one side.
Back Pain: While not always present, some individuals with scoliosis may experience back pain or discomfort.
Causes and Risk Factors
The exact cause of idiopathic scoliosis remains unknown, but several factors may contribute to its development:
Genetics: A family history of scoliosis can increase the likelihood of developing the condition.
Growth Spurts: Rapid growth during adolescence will typically increase the curvature.
Neuromuscular Conditions: Disorders such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy can lead to scoliosis.
Congenital Factors: Some individuals are born with spinal abnormalities that result in scoliosis.
Diagnosis and Treatment Options
Early detection is crucial in managing scoliosis effectively. When diagnosed early, many patients can see a full regression of the scoliosis with proper treatment. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and imaging tests, such as X-rays, to assess the degree of curvature.
1. Observation and Monitoring
This is never an option at our practice when scoliosis is present. No matter the degree of the scoliosis, some type of treatment will always be recommended. For mild cases, a simple daily scoliosis specific exercise may be all that is needed. The key is to address the curvatures no matter the size.
2. Bracing
In moderate to severe cases, especially in growing children, bracing can help prevent further curvature progression and in some cases reduce the curvature. The brace that our office custom designs, ScoliBrace, is specfically made with the goal of reducing the curvature. When done early enough it can be an important component of complete correction.
3. Scoliosis Specific Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care can be an effective treatment option for managing scoliosis symptoms and improving spinal alignment. At Lake Nona Family Chiropractic and Scoliosis Center, we use gentle, non-invasive scoliosis specific techniques to reduce discomfort, enhance mobility, and support overall spinal health. Our customized care plans may include spinal adjustments, therapeutic exercises, and postural training to help manage scoliosis.
4. Physiotheraputic Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSEs)
PSSEs are a crucial part of scoliosis care. By strengthening the muscles around the spine, improving posture, and enhancing flexibility, reduction of the curve can become permanent. This holistic approach can also help patients manage pain, and improve their quality of life.
5. Surgical Intervention
In severe cases, where the curvature is significant and continues to progress, surgical intervention may be necessary. Surgery aims to correct the curvature and stabilize the spine. However, this is typically considered a last resort after non-surgical options have been exhausted.
